The Icelandic horse was the day’s Featured Article on the front page of Wikipedia yesterday.
The article notes a number of facts about the horse, such as how they are the result of selective breeding, that exported horses are not allowed to return, and that while Icelandic settlers brought the breed over with them in the 9th and 10th centuries, most of their descendants were wiped out by a volcanic eruption in thr 1780s.
Also of particular interest is the Talk page of the article (always the most entertaining part of any Wikipedia article, after the References). There in, a rather heated discussion took part with regards to refering to the breed as “ponies.”
Icelandic horses are one of the country’s more symbolic resources, and a popular attraction for tourists.
