Nearly 34,000 Icelanders – roughly 10% of the population – have signed an online petition asking the Icelandic president to veto the Icesave bill, if it passes.
Organized by InDefence, the petition continues to gather support, even as members of the Finance Committee continue to hammer out the final details of the bill in preparation for a third and final round of votes on the floor of parliament.
Of special note is that over 100 fake signatures were logged on the site in a single day; 11 December. The group says that the signatures came from numerous IP addresses, among them Statistics Iceland, Icelandic government offices, RÚV and Fréttablaðið. A spokesman for InDefence emphasized to Vísir that the signature from Fréttablaðið turned out to be from journalist who just wanted to see how the petition system worked.
The list requires, among other things, that signatories leave their name and identity number (kennitala). Before the petition is presented, it will be compared to the National Registry one last time to ensure that every signature is from a real person.
