Here is a photo of a gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) dining on a duck in Engidal, Skutulsfjörður, in the north west of Iceland. A reporter on the scene said that the falcon had killed the duck somewhere near the top of a mountain, and was spotted flying down the slopes with the victim. It is unknown whether or not the falcon returned later to finish eating the duck, or simply wanted to kill it for personal reasons.
The gyrfalcon is the largest of all falcon species, and keeps itself near coastal and island areas of the Arctic of North America, Europe and Asia. The Icelandic subspecies, Falco rusticolus islandus, is distinct, genetically unique from its neighbors even as closeby as Greenland.
