Egilsstaðir’s forest area will not be among Iceland’s officially
protected areas over the next five years, the Environmental Committee
has concluded.
RÚV reports that in the original plan, the area was one of 13 areas around the country which would be protected sanctuaries over the next five years. However, it came to light that the parties in ownership of the forest, among them landowners, have no plans to do anything with the forest anyway. The Environmental Committee considered then that there was no need to protect the land in the first place.
Egilsstaðir’s forest is one of few wooded areas in the country with trees over one metre in height. More of this forest’s natural beauty can be seen here.
