Both the church and state have sent aid to help the displaced within and around Syria.
Vísir reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Icelandic Church Aid have sent 16.6 million ISK to Syria. These funds are to help displaced homeless within Syria, as well as Syrian refugees which have fled to neighbouring countries. About 200,000 people are expected to be directly helped by the aid.
The AFP reported last November that there had been a 30% rise in the number of homeless within Syria, with some 6.5 million people having already fled the country, and another 9.3 million people within Syria in need of outside assistance to survive.
The news of the relief aid comes just over a month after the government decided to cut foreign aid by some 400 million ISK. The government’s share of foreign aid to Syria totals 15 million ISK.
