Reykjavík, Gullfoss and Þingvellir are the three most photographed places in Iceland, according to Sightsmap, the crowdsourced sightseeing heatmap that Google released in 2012. The Blue Lagoon and Geysir round out Iceland’s top five most photographed locations; Akureyri, Goðafoss, Jökulsárlón, Skogafoss, and Stykkishólmur are also popular spots.
Sightmap’s heatmap data is based on the number of Panoramio photos which have been uploaded and tagged at any given location, with the least photos being “geotagged” at locations which are a dark brown on the map, a medium number at locations which are red, and the most photos in yellow areas.
In addition to a location’s ranking within its country, Sightmap also shows a sightseeing spot’s global ranking. Of the handful of Icelandic locations ranked on Sightsmap, Reykjavík is ranked highest globally at 546, and Gulfoss cracks the top 1,000 with its 807 ranking.
