At long last, the nursing home Hrafnista in Hafnarfjörður has begun selling beer and wine to its residents.
RÚV reports that Hrafnista’s coffee shop, Kaffihornið, has begun selling beer, wine, and “other light refreshments”. The first glass of red wine was sold to Hafnarfjörður mayor Guðrún Ágústa Guðmundsdóttir.
Magnús Margeirsson, the manager of Kaffihornið, told reporters that many residents have taken advantage of the wider selection of available drinks. He adds that they even have happy hour – after dinner is served at 18:00 and until 20:00.
Being able to sell alcohol on the premises has not always been easy, and is in fact the result of over a year of struggle with municipal authorities.
Hrafnista was originally denied the right to sell alcohol on the grounds that it is a residential institution, and as such, cannot qualify for a liquor licence.
To get around this, town council simply passed a measure which specifically allowed nursing homes to sell light alcohol. Those changes, now in effect, are today being enjoyed by Hrafnista’s residents.
