Published November 13, 2013

The Icelandic government announced that it will be donating 8 million ISK to ten different charities in Iceland.
The office of the Prime Minister announced that the donations are being made in the spirit of Christmas – although they will be made before the holidays, to help those in need.
The Mothers’ Support Committee of Akureyri, The Mothers’ Support Committee of Hafnarfjörður, The Mothers’ Support Committee of Kópavogur, The Mothers’ Support Committee of West Iceland and the Salvation Army of Iceland will receive 650,000 ISK each.
Icelandic Church Aid, Samhjálp (a Christian group that aids recovering addicts), The Mothers’ Support Committee of Reykjavík, Red Cross Iceland and Fjölskylduhjálp (a food bank) will receive 850,000 ISK each.
The announcement comes on the heels of news that the Governmental Budget Optimisation Group has recommended drastically reducing foreign aid to developing countries. In the words of Progressive MP Vigdís Hauksdóttir about the recommendation, “A bankrupt man cannot pay for others.”
