Filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur will take the lead in the race of making a film about Everest, when filming of his latest project commences in the Dolomites in Italy in January.
The film will be based on the disaster of 1996 when eight climbers were killed in a storm that hit three expeditions trying to scale the world’s tallest mountain.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and John Hawkes will star in the film which will also be shot in Iceland and Nepal, RÚV reports.
Estimated cost of the film, co-produced by Cross Creek and Walden media, is around 65 million USD or 8 billion ISK.
Pre-production of an Everest film by Sony is also underway and Fox recently announced the network has bought a TV series about an Everest expedition.
It therefore seems that Baltasar Kormákur will beat them to it, if filming goes well.
