The Icelandic government was sentenced today to pay damages to frequent Grapevine contributor Snorri Páll Jónsson Úlfhildarson for an arrest in May 2009.
Snorri was one of the Reykjavík Nine which were acquitted of charges of attempting to storm parliament and fight both security guards and police. MBL reports that Snorri won another legal victory today.
Snorri had been arrested on May 21 2009 for allegedly spitting on a police car, and then spitting in a police officer’s face. He was found not guilty of the charges.
While he had initially asked for 5 million ISK in damages, a deal was reached between Snorri and authorities, wherein it was decided that he would drop the damages he was seeking for the former arrest, and accept 300,000 ISK in damages from the Icelandic state for the latter arrest.
