An Icelandic bird expert encourages everyone to consider the small birds who must try and make it through the winter, and to offer them help.
As the days darken and the temperatures drop, some creatures fare better than others when it comes to staying alive. Bird expert Ellen Magnúsdóttir told Vísir that people should do what they can to make life easier for the little birds.
Redwings, starlings, redpolls (seen above), and snow buntings are all common little birds that one can find in Iceland has winter approaches. Ellen points out that people can feed these birds with seed that you can buy in any pet store. However, she recommends that the birds get some fat in their diet, too – leaving out buttered bread is especially convenient.
Ellen considers feeding small birds a mutually beneficial act. “It’s good for them to get food, and there are also lots of people who feed birds for their own enjoyment, who find it fun to watch them,” she told reporters.
Seagulls, she says, no one has to worry about. Most seagulls move out to sea to find their food when winter comes, and seldom look for something to eat in peoples’ gardens.
