The Icelandic men’s national team in football is in 46th place on FIFA’s new world ranking list, released on Thursday.
That’s 8 places higher than last time, no doubt thanks to the team’s success recently, as reported. And Iceland is now number 26 of European national teams.
At the top towers Spain, as before, followed by Germany and Argentina.
The Swedish national team drops down three places, to number 25 on FIFA’s list and is now in sixth place of the eight nations in the play-offs for the World Cup in Brazil next year.
That means Sweden joins Iceland in the lower half of the runner-ups and therefore the two nations can’t meet in the play-offs.
Which is a good thing as the Icelandic team’s manager is Swede Lars Lagerbäck, so awkwardness has been averted for now.
