From Iceland — Illegal To Increase Registration Fees

Illegal To Increase Registration Fees

Published October 12, 2013

The Parliamentary Ombudsman has ruled that it is illegal for the University of Iceland to increase registration fees for students.
According to the ruling, the University of Iceland recently added a 15% increase to registration fees, if registration takes place after the registration deadline. A student who was so charged sought help from the Parliamentary Ombudsman on the matter.
The ombudsman ruled that there is no legal justification for the 15% charge, and is therefore against the law. The ombudsman has advised the university to treat students in accordance with the law.
Students recently won a similar victory against the university system, when the Reykjavík District Court ruled that it was illegal for the Student Loan Fund to suddenly increase the credit requirement for loan qualification.
