A young Polish woman who was lost for hours on Mount Súlur was rescued yesterday afternoon thanks to her mobile phone, the Icelandic Association of Search and Rescue (Landsbjörg) told the Grapevine.
The woman in question hiked up a well-known path on the mountain around midday yesterday. However, as the day progressed, the weather conditions and visibility worsened and the woman became lost.
Fortunately, the woman was carrying a mobile phone and made a call to the rescue team at around 14:00. Landsbjörg told the Grapevine that the woman needed an interpreter to communicate with the rescue team.
Four hours after the rescue call was made, the woman was finally found off the path she had planned to follow. She was very cold and could hardly walk, so the rescue team had to carry her for three kilometres until she could be taken to the hospital by ATV. She would have likely not survived the night if she had not been found.
There have been extreme weather conditions all over Iceland in the past few days, with winds reaching up to 40 m/s in some parts.
