Icelandic authorities are among those who have asked for, and received, information from Facebook about the social media’s user or users.
Facebook released yesterday a list of countries whose authorities have sought requested information from the social networking service. It turns out that Iceland is on that list, after requesting information once, and being provided with the information, RÚV reports.
Deputy police commissioner Jón H. B. Snorrason confirmed with RÚV that the police had used information provided by Facebook in its investigation, although he said nothing about which case, or cases, it had been done for.
Meanwhile, US authorities have requested information from Facebook around 11 thousand times, about approximately 20 thousand users, regarding, according to Facebook, both crimes and national security.
Overall, authorities have been given some or full access to 79% of the cases information was requested on.
Yesterday’s list is as much information as Facebook can reveal to the public but the company stated that it would continue pressuring authorities to increase transparency.
