The latest results from Capacent’s “Hope Index” seem to indicate that people are losing their faith in the newly-elected government.
The index, which is measured monthly, attempts to quantify peoples’ level of hope and confidence in different aspects of their daily lives. This polling is based on five questions, all of which pertain to future outlooks on the economic and employment front. The index uses a scale from 0-200, with 100 indicating an equal proportion of positive and negative outlooks amongst respondents.
Last May marked the first time since the economic crash of autumn 2008 that positive responses were in the majority, with a Hope Index of 101. The actual polling itself was conducted before last April’s parliamentary elections. However, the results of last July’s polling now show a significant drop, down to 78.5, meaning a mostly negative outlook among Icelanders towards the near future of the country’s economy.
Based on these results, it appears that the Icelanders who voted for the Independence Party and the Progressives in the hopes of improving Iceland’s economic situation have become since disappointed with their work thus far. Where the trend will go from here remains to be seen.
