Visitors and residents of Snæfellsnes have enjoyed the company of a seal basking in the sun on the sea shore lately.
“About three to four weeks ago, we noticed this huge seal on the seashore,” Kristjana Elísabet Sigurðardóttir, employee at Hótel Búðir, told mbl.is.
“We’ve kept an eye on it since and I’ve heard of people going right up to it so it’s obviously very tame.”People at the hotel have been watching the seal with binoculars from the hotel’s sun room.
“Last week, I and my friend went over to the seal because we thought it was so cute. We took our time pottering about near it and it didn’t mind at all. It just watched us, spread out and basked in the sun,” Kristjana said.
She added that she then couldn’t resist trying to pat it. “So I sneaked up to it and touched its back. The seal turned towards me and snorted but that was it. I think it’s here to stay, it looks like it’s very comfortable there. It stretches its flippers, rubs its nose with them and reaches toward the sun, just like cats do. I could see it was very contented.”
