The first census taken in Iceland, in 1703, has been deemed historically important by UNESCO. It is the oldest preserved census document in the world.
“This is a recognition that we have a unique source that is not just valuable to Iceland but for the world. We have an obligation to preserve it and secure it and to ensure access to it for the entire world,” said Eiríkur G. Guðmundsson, national archivist, to RÚV.
The census document, which lists the name, age, and social and employment status of every Icelander at the time, will soon be put online for all to see and appreciate.
