Insurance companies in Iceland receive an average of two reports daily for cars damaged while being operated by tourists in the country.
According to Gísli Níls Einarsson, a representative with VÍS insurance company, many of the accidents are caused by speeding, though a large number are attributed to tourists not having experience driving on gravel roads.
Tourists have been involved in 136 fatal car accidents in Iceland between the years 2000 and 2010, RÚV reports. With tourism steadily rising since 2006 some measures are being taken to reduce the number of road infractions involving tourists, including requiring tourists to pass a basic test on road rules when renting a car, and introducing a mobile app with links to videos about road signs and regulations in Iceland. Just don’t use the app and watch the videos while driving. That would be counterproductive.
