Guðmundur Ingi Þóroddsson was sentenced yesterday in Denmark to twelve years in prison for smuggling a large quanity of drugs into the country, Vísir reports.
Guðmundur was involved in a crime ring that made several attempts to smuggle amphetamines into Denmark. The head of the Danish Police’s organised crime division, Steffen Thaaning Steffensen, announced in a press conference that an eighteen person task force was involved in the investigation. Authories eventually intercepted and seized the 66 kilograms of amphetamines the crime ring was attempting to smuggle.
Guðmundur confessed to his part in the case and he was tried separately from ten other accused, including seven more Icelanders. Their trial will end in August.
This is not the first time Guðmundur is in hot water for drug trafficking: in 2000 he was sentenced to seven years in prison in Iceland, and to another five years in 2002 for conspiracy to smuggle drugs while in prison.
