The North Sailing whale watching company in Húsavík will be converting its entire fleet of vessels to run on electric power within a few years, Morgunblaðið reports.
Their aim is to have all the boats run primarily on solar, wind and magnet generated electricity. The boats currently run on diesel engines, which they will retain as backup systems. The company intends to use biodiesel for these secondary engines. They are running pilot tests of this new system on their schooner Opal.
North Sailing and their partners are currently in the process of trying to obtain funding for this project, according to Morgunblaðið.
