The concentration of particulates in the air in the capital area is above the healthy limit today, according to an announcement on the City of Reykjavík’s website.
The condition is made worse by the lack of precipitation over the past days and the dry conditions on the roads coupled with light winds. Anybody driving around the capital area would have likely noticed high quantities of dust being blown up over the weekend, as well. Much of the particulate matter in the air today is a result of ash that blew into the are a couple of weeks ago.
The particulate reading in a 30-minute period on Grensásvegur this morning was 94.3 micrograms per cubic meter. The health limit is 50 micrograms per cubic meter.
The forecast for the coming days continues to call for dry weather and increased winds, so dust will continue to be caught up in the air, decreasing the air quality in the coming days. The City’s Department of Health is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to release updates and warnings as necessary.
