The annual meeting of merchants and real estate owners of Laugavegur was held yesterday and, for the third year running, the merchants are up in arms about the planned temporary closure of Laugavegur to car traffic for two months this summer, RÚV reports.
Merchants and real estate owners are upset that the city will make a 300 metre stretch of the street open to pedestrians onle once again, and are not pleased with parking fees increasing along the length of the street.
The argument of merchants for the past two years has been that making Laugavegur a pedestrian street is harmful to their business, however the majority of merchants along Laugavegur have responded in polls – following the 2011 and 2012 road closures – that they were pleased with Laugavegur being a pedestrian street. In fact, foot traffic along Laugavegur and into shops increased by 50% both summers that the road has been closed to car traffic.
As in years past, the temporary transformation of Laugavegur into a pedestrian street will affect just 17 parking spaces.
