Speaker of Alþingi, Ásta Ragnheiður Jóhannesdóttir, took a moment to reflect on today being the anniversary of the first woman to be elected to Icelandic Parliament, mbl.is reports.
Ninety years ago today Ingibjörg H. Bjarnason, a school principal, took her seat in the 35th installment of parliament in 1923, having been elected the previous summer. Ingibjörg was first elected to parliament as a representative for the Women’s Party. She later joined the Conservative Party and, in 1929, became an MP for the Independence Party. She sat in Parliament until 1930.
Ásta Ragnheiður read aloud a quote from Jóhannes Jóhannesson, an MP who served with Ingibjörg, to mark the occasion: “This will be the first time a woman takes a seat in parliament, and I want to express the joy I have for this event. I wish the distinguished parliamentarian Ingibjörg H. Bjarnason success and satisfaction in her work.”
