There are guides and there are guides. Longevity sets us apart and for 20-plus-years we have dined, wined, ordered takeaways and visited spots once, twice, a dozen times in our quest to find the city’s best burgers, bakeries, brews and more.

The Best of Reykjavík dining category has always reflected reality and nothing warms our hearts more than to see Newcomers graduate to winners as the years go by. Now we have winners who will have the added recognition of being Reykjavík Institutions, a badge of honour to commend establishments that have stood the test of time — so keep an eye out for the *I as you peruse our lists of what’s Best.

Here’s to another year of deliciousness, skál!

Best Coffeehouse

Hygge Coffee & Microbakery

Seljavegur 2

“This is as dark and perfect as a coffee gets.” This cosy spot delivers hygge in spades. Service is spiffy, the coffee is near perfectly brewed and the added bonus of the wee bakery means that you can nosh on something laminated, glazed or baked with your cuppa. Ample seating means you can stay largely undisturbed in a corner, be more social, or quietly read by the bar.

Kaffi Ó-le

Hafnarstraeti 11

Kaffi Ó-le is a slick little spot frequented by aspiring cool kids in adult sizes as well as hotel guests and curious cats from the streets. The joy of sipping on your steamy cup of dark coffee, while you people watch from the large windows is unparalleled, never mind that the cup may be perfect or a near miss depending on the barista on duty.

RIP. Since our panel decision, this business closed.

RUNNER-UP

Reykjavík Roasters Asmundarsalur

Freyjugata 41

Despite a year riddled with erratic opening hours and surprise closures, this remains a firm favourite. Why, you ask? Well, the coffee, for one. Pioneers of the third-wave speciality coffee culture, Roasters also pioneered the “shame me, barista,” brand of Portlandia-level service. The Asmundarsalur location screams quiet luxury with its thoughtful architecture, and mix of communal and solo seating that is ideal for solo dates or business meetings.
