There are guides and there are guides. Longevity sets us apart and for 20-plus-years we have dined, wined, ordered takeaways and visited spots once, twice, a dozen times in our quest to find the city’s best burgers, bakeries, brews and more.

The Best of Reykjavík dining category has always reflected reality and nothing warms our hearts more than to see Newcomers graduate to winners as the years go by. Now we have winners who will have the added recognition of being Reykjavík Institutions, a badge of honour to commend establishments that have stood the test of time — so keep an eye out for the *I as you peruse our lists of what’s Best.

Here’s to another year of deliciousness, skál!

Best Bakery

Sandholt (I)*

Laugavegur 36

What can we say about Sandholt that hasn’t been said already? One bite of their seasonal tarts, seedy breads, fluffy foccacias and hands-down best vínarbrauð are proof of why this beloved bakery is a firm favourite with visitors and locals alike. Despite their popularity, they have remained a single-location shop. No one does sweet and savoury or a spectrum of breads like Sandholt. Get there early, and get in line.

RUNNER-UP

Brauð & Co.

Multiple locations

“You are never far from a Brauð og Co,” our panel noted wryly, conceding that, “for a convenient bakery, they are striving to be the best” and consistently deliver on that promise. Yes, the cinnamon buns are popular, but it is in bites of the granola snuður that the real action is found. Whilst bakeries aren’t the cheapest affairs in town, Brauð & Co.’s commitment to food wastage is also commendable.

RUNNER-UP

Deig

Tryggvagata 14

“How can you say no to those doughnuts?” The spunky little bakery has expanded their selection of fresh fried doughnuts to weekend specials and other staples, each one garnering renewed appreciation each time they appear on the shelves. The crème brûlée is the stuff of dreams, the kleina a textural delight, and the vanilla cruller is a simple yet delicious light-as-air swirl of sugary happiness, while the breads hold their own.
