A weather forecast issued by the Icelandic Met Office uncategorically says that today is not the day to be traveling in southern or eastern Iceland.
According to the forecast, an orange alert is in effect for the whole of southern Iceland–from the southern coast of Snæfellsnes to Vík–and the entirety of East Iceland. This means wind speeds ranging from 18 to 28 metres per second, with gusts that can reach up to 30 to 38 metres per second. This is absolutely not the weather for traveling, by road, sea or air, and some bus routes may be cancelled.
At the same time, a yellow warning is in effect for the northern coast of Snæfellsnes, the Westfjords, northwest Iceland, northeast Iceland, and the Highlands. Don’t let your guard down, though, as this means wind speeds from 18 to 23 metres per second, and road travel is strongly discouraged.
