Over 500 tremors were recorded in and around Öxarfjörður in North Iceland, beginning Saturday evening, picking up considerable pace through Sunday, and still continuing at the time of this writing.
As the Icelandic Met Office details, most of these tremors were recorded at a magnitude of 1 or 2, but there were three tremors measuring at a magnitude above 3. The last recorded tremor at the time of this writing occurred at 12:25, with a magnitude of 1.3.
In all, there have so far been 589 recorded tremors in and around Öxarfjörður.
Although this may sound troubling, an expert at the Met Office told RÚV this is a regular occurrence.
“It’s just fairly common to get tremors in this area, somewhere on the Tjörnes Fracture Zone,” Sigþrúður Ármannsdóttir told reporters. “So we’re not worried about this, but we are monitoring the situation.”
It is impossible to say how long these tremors will continue, but being fairly far away from any populated areas, there is little danger to the general populace.
