The organisers of the beloved springtime music festival Sónar Reykjavík have now released a statement confirming what the Grapevine reported yesterday—the music festival is cancelled on account of WOW Air’s collapse. They are encouraging those who bought tickets to seek a refund, and to look into their passenger rights at WOW Air.
The statement, in full, is as follows:
Given the recent challenges facing the tourism and travel industry in Iceland, Upplifun ehf, the promoter of Sónar Reykjavik regrets to announce the cancellation of Sónar Reykjavík 2019.
Last Thursday, Icelandic airline WOW Air abruptly ceased operations. As a result, the travel plans of up to half of all the Sónar Reykjavík ticket-holders and numerous artists scheduled to perform have been severely affected or cancelled.
This has been compounded by an extremely delicate local situation in Iceland, meaning that Sónar Reykjavik cannot guarantee the same calibre of experience we have provided over the last six years, both for artists and fans.
In light of this, and given the short amount of time remaining until the festival, we are faced with no other choice but to announce its cancellation for this year.
Info on refunds and more can be found here.
We also encourage all those who have booked flights with WOW Air to be aware of their consumer rights. Please check WOW’s website for more information.
With sincere apologies to all those affected
Team Upplifun
Sónar, while based in Barcelona, has had a presence in Reykjavík for several years now. Typically one of the brighter spots in the springtime in Reykjavík, while its cancellation this year is unfortunate, there is as yet no reason to believe the festival will not resume next year—which it hopefully will.
