Fljótsdalshérað County in East Iceland have approved a cat culling programme, reports RÚV.

Stray cats in that part of Iceland have apparently become a plague and employees will soon begin to lay traps to catch cats.

In order to assure that no pets are accidentally put down, public awareness campaigns will be conducted by county employees.

Once captured the cats will be held in a kennel for a set period of time, in case they are claimed, before they are put to sleep.
