Our intrepid photographer Art Bicnick recently took a drive around Iceland’s frozen southern coastline, coming back with a treasure trove of images. One of the stops was the Vatnajökull ice cave, also known as the “crystal cavern.”

“We had about a 30-minute ride from Jökulsárlón to Breiðamerkurjökull in a superjeep,” recalls Art. “There were several more jeeps parked there, and some other enthusiasts of icy adventures. The wind was so strong that it was difficult to stand on the slippery ice. But we got helmets and crampons from the guide.”

After a short walk, they reached the cave. “It was a 10 minute walk,” continued Art, “and what a beautiful walk it was. There was a huge blizzard, and it felt like we were on Mount Everest or something. Inside, of course, we found that surprising, unusual blue colour, with the ice illuminated by the light from outside. We had to crawl on all fours to get to the main chamber, where we met another group of tourists. It was a little tight in there, but after a while, they left, leaving us to get these shots of the frozen beauty of the cave.”
