The Icelandic Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings due to a northeasterly snowstorm, reports RÚV. The first takes effect in Southeast Iceland at 18:00 this evening, and the second in South Iceland at midnight. Both remain in effect until 15:00 tomorrow.
The Met Office forecasts northeasterly winds of 10 to 18 meters per second, accompanied by snowfall and poor visibility. Drivers are warned that road conditions may deteriorate. The warning in Southeast Iceland mainly applies to the western part of the region, extending east to Breiðamerkursandur.
A meteorologist from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration says that whiteout conditions may develop from Sandskeið eastward across Hellisheiði starting this evening and lasting through tomorrow morning’s commute. In the southernmost part of the country, there will be a snowstorm and drifting snow, with a risk of traffic disruptions late tonight.
Conditions are not expected to improve significantly until after noon tomorrow.
