Since the severe erosion affecting Reynisfjara, landowners have been attempting to make due with the changed landscape. In conversation with RÚV, landowner and farmer Ívar Guðnason said that they had secured the viewpoint in the area as well as removing large rocks from the beach to mitigate further displacement. “We don’t know if it’ll suffice,” Ívar told RÚV.
To bolster the foundations, farmers have been ferrying the rocks which the sea had displaced during the heavy easterly winds.
According to Ívar, it is uncertain whether the beach will ever be the same. However, coastal expert at the Icelandic Coastal and Road Administration Sigurður Sigurðarson claimed that the beach will recover when the winds turn westwards.
“Usually, the sand has moved from west to east, but the last winter the case has been the opposite. The easterly winds have been much stronger,” he told RÚV.
Reynisfjara is not closed to guests during the current operations, but, due to the presence of heavy machinery, some areas have been closed off.
