Keeping cats and dogs in an apartment building is no longer conditioned by neighbouring residents’ consent, after Alþingi passed a change to the law on multidwelling units.
Until now, apartment building households could not keep their furry friends without acquiring the approval of other residents.
Proposed by Minister of Social Affairs and Housing and Flokkur Fólksins MP Inga Sæland, the bill emphasises equalising the rights of people to have cats and dogs independent of their economic status and dwelling location.
Voting on the amendment, Liberal Reform MP Ingvar Þóroddson said: “It is an issue of freedom and justice that people have the same rights to keep pets, whether or not they live in a multi-dwelling building or a single family home,” concluding, “Ég segi mjá” — a purrfect pun.
