Germany’s Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, met with Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir at the Icelandic government offices today, reports RÚV. Boris is scheduled to visit the security area at Keflavík Airport before leaving the country. A group of members of the German Bundestag is accompanying him and will meet with Iceland’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
Yesterday, Boris met with Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, to sign a bilateral declaration of intent on defence. The agreement is designed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and enhance security in the North Atlantic.
Among the key goals outlined in the declaration are closer collaboration on defence policy, military cooperation in cybersecurity and defence, procurement of defence-related technology, and joint training and exercises.
Both countries have expressed their intention to hold regular consultation meetings and to strengthen ties between their security institutions. Þorgerður Katrín said the declaration reinforces Iceland’s main pillars of defence and security cooperation, its NATO membership, and its defence collaboration with the United States.
