Approximately 44% of the Icelandic population is in favour of joining the European Union, according to a new Gallup survey, RÚV reports.

Carried out between March 7-16, 2025, around 44% of respondents claimed to be positively in favour of Iceland entering the EU. About 36% responded negatively.

The results correspond to a 2022 study, demonstrating the changing attitudes towards EU membership.

Capital area residents are more likely to support EU membership than rural area inhabitants, with about 50% of city slickers in favour. About 45% of rural area residents are opposed to the idea. Furthermore, people with university degrees are more likely to support Iceland’s entry than those without.

The government intends to hold a referendum, no later than 2027, concerning Iceland’s negotiations for EU membership. Iceland’s membership application, submitted in 2010, is still active, RÚV reports.
