If you’re ready to hit the weekend running, we’ve got some suggestions for you: The University of Iceland’s Intelligent Instruments Lab will be celebrating its 100th Open Lab at 12 Tónar at 18:00. La Dimensión at RVK Tónabíó will bring a night of Cumbia starting at 20:00, complete with a pop-up from La Poblana. KUSK & Óviti will host a release party for LÆT FRÁ MÉR LÆTI at Prikið, also at 20:00, and Ann and Me: or The Big Bad Abortion Play will be at Dansverkstæðið at 19:00 (with its second, and final, night on Saturday at 19:00).
Then, it’s the weekend! Legendary Dr. Gunni is this week’s Herðum haus, always on Saturdays at 20:30 at RVK Tónabíó, and Spacestation‘s release concert for Reykjavík Syndrome will take place at Iðnó at 20:00.
On Sunday, at 13:30, there’s a fascinating multi-hyphenate event at Smekkleysa: hot sauce tasting-dj workshop-open decks-dancing & drinking with DFND, aka papi chino, Swiss DJ and hot sauce maker. Sunday is also your last chance to check out some exhibitions — Best Book Design from all over the world at the Museum of Design and Applied Art closes, and Unnar Örn’s final day in Ásmundarsafn‘s ongoing work-in-progress exhibition Wonderland is Sunday at 14:00 before Ásta Fanney takes over on March 29. If you’re planning the week ahead already, why not check out Dream Wife & Lottó on March 27?

This exhibition tracks the change of glaciers from 1890 to the present, and predicts the future if we continue how we are progressing. Collaboratively organised by various natural history, weather, and research institutions in Iceland, this exhibition opens today on the first-ever World Day for Glaciers. Further, opening the exhibition will be none other than acclaimed writer and vocal climate activist Andri Snær Magnason. ISH
Friday, March 21 — 19:00 — Smekkleysa — 2.500kr or PWYC
The No Borders movement in Iceland is beginning a new concert series, with all proceeds going directly to a family facing deportation. No Borders promises “high-energy performance and a damn good time,” and seeing the punk/rock/hardcore artists slotted to perform I bet that’s exactly right. For a night of solidarity, resistance, and damn good music, look no further than Smekkleysa. ISH
Opening Saturday, March 22 — 16:00 — Korpúlfsstaðir — Free
This weekend is bringing us not one, but two nature-centric art exhibitions — and we’re here for it! Everyone’s talking about retreating glaciers, and …CIER is diving into the conversation. A group show featuring seven Nordic-Baltic artists from the SÍM residency, the exhibition uses video, sound, and performance to explore the complex relationship between human curiosity and the disappearing ice. In their words, “Rather than presenting works about glaciers, the exhibition engages with them, approaching ice, water, and melt as both material and metaphor in an embodied and critical manner.” IZ
Opening Saturday, March 22 — 15:00 — Reykjavík Botanic Garden in Laugardalur — Free
The MFA students at the Iceland University of the Arts present Dwelling, a group exhibition curated by MFA/PhD of Art History & Art Theory students. Intentionally situated outdoors, this exhibition explores humans and nature, positioning the two as equals. While at the exhibition one should not just consider the artwork, but consider the vegetation surrounding it as well. If you’re busy this weekend, though, fear not — they’ll be guiding a special flashlight tour for Good Thursday, March 27 at 20:30. ISH
