On December 11, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, leader of Viðreisn (the Liberal Reform Party), said in conversation with RÚV that a new government is likely to be formed by the end of 2024.
Since the election on November 30, Samfylkingin (the Social Democratic Alliance), Flokkur fólksins (People’s Part) and Viðreisn have been preparing government formation.
Task forces are currently working through the most important issues and are expected to deliver their results before the next weekend. The six groups comprise representatives from the three parties.
Þorgerður said that the party leaders are taking one day at a time, and that the work has gone well overall.
Samfylkingin Leader Kristrún Frostadóttir, Flokkur fólksins Leader Inga Sæland, and Þorgerður Katrín have had frequent meetings since the elections.
According to Þorgerður, the broad strokes of the compromise are in order, with some loose ends needed to tie up.
