Following recent reports of sea ice approaching the Icelandic coast, as well as NAVTEX alerts about an iceberg in the northwest channel, the Icelandic Coast Guard has paid a visit to the iceberg in question to assess the situation.
In a post on Facebook, the Coast Guard states that they conducted helicopter patrols of the area yesterday afternoon. As they flew north from the Westfjords, they at first observed a relatively small iceberg measuring some 10 metres by 15 metres, but further north, “a large and majestic” iceberg appeared.
The Coast Guard landed a helicopter on the iceberg in question, which is some 250 metres by 150 metres, and posted the following video:
The Coast Guard advised seafarers to exercise caution, and in the Facebook post included a map of the locations of the sea ice and icebergs in the northwest waters.
