Grapevine has been informed that last week’s offer of a free whale watching trip to the English football team still stands, and is being extended.

As reported, Húsavík whale watching company North Sailing put aside 23 tickets for a free whale watching day trip – one for every member of the English team – in the event of their defeat. As the inevitable has happened, The Grapevine contacted North Sailing owner Guðbjartur Jónsson to see if the offer still stands.

“Yes, it certainly does,” Guðbjartur told us. “We’ve actually invited every English person in Húsavík a free whale watching trip today.”

Like pretty much everyone in Iceland, Guðbjartur also followed yesterday’s game.

“I wasn’t really surprised by the result,” he told us. “I knew England was going to play a great game, which they did. But Iceland played with their hearts and their heads.”

As Iceland is now slated to face France in the next round of the tournament, we asked if his generous offer would extend to the French as well, when Iceland defeats them.

“We’re still thinking about our next move,” Guðbjartur said. “But we will certainly send something to our friends in France. It’s a friendly game, and we want to be polite. It could be nice for them to take a trip to Iceland after the game.”
