From Iceland — Biggest Space Battle In History

Biggest Space Battle In History

Published July 30, 2013

Nearly 3,000 spaceships were damaged or destroyed in the biggest space battle of all times on Sunday, in video game Eve Online.

Thousands of players fought for over four hours and millions of lives were sacrificed. Tension had been building up for a long time in a star system known as 6VDT between two sides, the TEST Alliance and CFC.

“Although I haven’t yet fully checked everything, I think it’s safe to call this one of the biggest battles in the history of video games,” Eldar Ástþórsson, at Icelandic video game developer CCP Games, told visir.is. “There were thousands of players fighting online at the same time. It’s interesting to see how much attention this battle got, there were also thousands of people watching it live.”

The battle revolved around a territory called Fountain. The creators of Eve Online had recently added a few valuable moons which the two alliances wanted to gain power over. Eventually, CFC prevailed but, according to Huffington Post, not without its own losses.

It’s too soon to say how much the battle cost the players but a battle of similar size took place earlier this year and cost the players around 20,000 USD in real-world terms.
