From Iceland — Downtown Closed To Traffic For Culture Night

Downtown Closed To Traffic For Culture Night

Published August 15, 2012

This year’s Culture Night – which starts this Saturday – will be held under the ambitious plan of closing off all of downtown to car traffic and making bus travel free.
The theme of this year’s Culture Night, city officials said in a statement to the press, is “Gakktu í bæinn” (lit. “walk in the town”, a greeting one usually makes to someone who has visited your home, as a way of offering them to come inside). For the purposes of this year’s Culture Night, almost all of downtown will be completely blocked from car traffic in order to encourage people to leave their cars at home and walk around downtown.
Furthermore, several bus routes will be free of charge on this day. A list of free bus routes for Culture Night – including where the routes begin and end – can be found here under “Strætó BS”. Further down the same page, a map is showing – in orange – what streets will be blocked from car traffic.
A full schedule of events, in English, can be found here (.pdf file).
