Wants To Build Luxury Hotel At Þingvellir

Published July 29, 2011

An entrepreneur from India is hoping to build a luxury hotel and theme park at Þingvellir National Park.
The idea has apparently been in the works for months now, although no final decision has been reached on the matter. The proposed hotel, golf course and theme park would not be in the centre of the area, but rather on the periphery.
Pressan has reportedly contacted the company behind the idea, Auro Investment Partners, who have already bought land in the Skálabrekka area of Þingvellir from Landsbanki.
When the man behind the idea, Bala Kamallakharan, was reached, he replied:

Thank you for your interest in our project in Thingvellir, We are in the process of deciding the size and scope of the project, however we would like to develop an environmentally compatible and sustainable tourist destination that complements the history, heritage and beauty of Thingvellir and Iceland.

As it stands, the exact details of the plan – including when construction would begin – have not been finalised.
