From Iceland — Government Equal Between Genders

Government Equal Between Genders

Published October 2, 2009

The resignation of Ögmundur Jónasson from the position of Health
Minister and the appointment of Álfheiður Ingadóttir in his place
creates an even number of men and women in the ministerships.
According to Vísir, the Women’s Movement of the Social Democratic Party officially celebrated the event, in a statement saying in part that “it has taken the republic 65 years to achieve the given equal right to have a government comprised of an equal number of men and women. It is the belief of the Women’s Movement that with this [new appointment] an example is set for the future, whereby the government will always be arranged equally between men and women.”
Ögmundur Jónasson and Álfheiður Ingadóttir are both members of the Leftist-Green Party. Jónasson resigned from his position the day before yesterday, citing irreconciliable differences with the government with regards to Icesave. He will continue to work as an MP.
