From Iceland — Police Organize Bicycle Auction

Police Organize Bicycle Auction

Published May 20, 2009

Need a new bicycle? Reykjavík city police will be holding a bike auction today.
About 150 bicycles will be up for auction at Askalind 2A in Kópavogur at 13:30 today. No, they weren’t seized from drug dealers. Rather, these are abandoned bicycles which were found around the capital area, claimed by no one. The number of abandoned bicycles has apparently accumulated to the point where police felt obliged to auction them away.
It’s not uncommon to see people bicycling as a mode of transportation in downtown Reykjavík, despite the lack of bicycle lanes that one might find in other Scandinavian countries. There are also a number of extensive bicycle paths for leisurely riding, located all along the coastline throughout the capital area.
