‘Fall’ is so laid back that one hardly notices that the singer arrives a song too late. When he finally does, he seems friendly while somewhat inconspicuous, a little like Badly Drawn Boy. So far, so good.
It is only when one starts paying attention to the English language lyrics that the troubles begin. Yes, one may get older and no longer have as much need for “the wicked game of fortune and fame,” but does that really make one “small, smaller than a dwarf?”
Concern for the state of things comes in a song entitled ‘Stand Up.’ The chorus is a catchy sing-along, while ‘I Couldn’t Find Her’ brings Berlin-era Bowie to mind, but in both cases the lyrics lag behind the music.
The title track is a reference to that terrible/wonderful autumn of 2008 when it all came crashing down, but instead of rage we find sadness. The album ends at a bus stop waiting for Noah’s Ark to come take us away, but the anger of those left behind may be more intriguing.
Fall passes by pleasantly enough, but it’s hardly an earth shattering experience.
