From Iceland — Vegamót

Unless you have the parking god on your side you are going to have to cruise for a parking space for this wildly popular bistro bar a few steps from Laugavegur, across the street from Mal og Menning. The noisy two-story space with its concrete walls painted ash grey, and with two full-service bars, service for 90 inside and expanding to another 30 outside, weather permitting with a take-out area, has a hefty menu – though looking at the ready-for-anything patrons, in their 20s and 30s, it’s doubtful the food or quick service is the main draw.
The menu offers a section called ‘healthy dishes.’ Don’t let the title throw you. One of the entrees offered for the legion of the lean, the Sesame Fried Chicken with 2.1 grams of saturated fat with only 348 calories was so tasty it was hard to believe it was good for you. It’s not going to replace a juicy burger with saturated fat and fries, but its crisp julienne veggies, noodles and Thai-basil sauce were filling and lively. While the menu boasts small courses, such as Spanish Paella, Caesar salad with strips pf chicken and bacon, as well as budget-minded soup with a basket of bread and a mug of beer, I advise sharing Tagliolina with lobster (1690 kronur) a main course concoction of fresh Tagliona noodles and lobster swimming in a creamy high-calorie sauce of mushroom, blue cheese, pesto and parmesan.
At 10 p.m. the kitchen closes down and Vegamót morphs into a steamy DJ spinning party romp where home-grown foxy felines and loads of Brits canoodle and boogie until the wee hours. Also, the Vegamót website offers an area to download snapshots of your evening where everybody looks blissed-out in that short-term memory loss sort of way.
