Two weekends ago, not long after the official first day of Icelandic spring, we took a road trip up to the wild countryside of the Westfjords. The further north we got, the more apparent it became that some regions of the countryside missed the memo about the arrival of springtime: there were drift-laden mountain passes, closed roads, frozen waterfalls and a barrage of snowstorms and sleet showers.
It might not have been ideal weather for sightseeing—the road to Dynjandi, for example, was closed—but it did create some picturesque scenes and dynamic landscapes. Here are some of our favourite shots from the road trip there, starting with the almost-green southern Iceland countryside, and ending with a much-needed hot meal at Fosshotel Westfjords.
