Graduates from the School of Photography in Iceland will celebrate their graduation by exhibiting their final photography projects. Their projects tackle diverse subjects such as environmentalism, 101 shopkeepers, cosmopolitanism, and much more, drawing inspiration from a varied selection of ideologies and techniques.
#101Shopkeepers

Helga’s portraits honour the shopkeepers of 101 Reykjavík who have been hard hit by downtown developments. While tourism in Iceland is growing and hotels are being built, rent gets higher and many shopkeepers are forced to close their stores, many of which have had an impact on downtown Reykjavík’s character.

Unnur tackles the discussion of abandoned communities in smaller towns of Iceland. Towns that were full of life not so long ago that are now all but empty. She asks at what point communities stop being communities, using Hrísey as an example. Hrísey is a town with a current population of 90, but just a few years back it had 200 people.
The fall from Paradise

Ellen’s photos get the viewer to consider how western consumption has had a negative effect on the environment. We are bombarded with news about various environmental subjects and statistics, and yet seem unmoved—have we become jaded and over saturated to those kinds of messages?

The exhibition is hosted at Læknaminjasafnið, Neströð Nesstofu, and opens on January 30. The exhibition is open until February 7 and admission is free!
There’s an opening party on January 30 at 15:00, after which the exhibit is open from 15:00-20:00 during the week, and 12:00-18:00 on weekends.
