In Mid April, Ted Nugent, the Republican poet laureate was in the news again. (You know, the guy who wrote Cat Scratch Fever: “I don’t know where they come from but they sure do come… I hope they’re doin’ it for free.” The family values guy.)
His new philosophy, according to the Associated Press, is to make gun rights activists “hardcore, radical extremists demanding the right to self defence.”
The former rock n roller paved out a user-friendly guide toward becoming an extremist: ostracize your neighbours by excluding them from barbeques. (We’re serious, here’s the quote: “No one is allowed at our barbeques unless they are an NRA member.”)
Once you exclude people from your barbeque, you’re apparently on a slippery slope. As reported in the American media on 17 April, Nugent next suggested that NRA members gathered at the annual NRA convention in Houston get to killing.
“Remember the Alamo! Shoot ‘em! To show you how radical I am, I want carjackers dead. I want rapists dead. I want burglars dead. I want child molesters dead. I want the bad guys dead. No court case. No parole. No early release. I want ‘em dead. Get a gun and when they attack you, shoot ‘em.”
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who ran for office as a moderate and began his administration reaching across party lines, decided to endorse armed vigilantes in an April 1 interview. Describing the Arizona Minutemen, a militia that President Bush has condemned as vigilantes, Schwarzenegger stated “I think they’ve done a terrific job. They’ve cut down the crossing of illegal immigrants a huge percentage. So it just shows that it works when you go and make an effort and when you work hard. It’s a doable thing.”
We really wish we were making this up.
